The flag was unfurled on the USS Intrepid as it returned home to Pier 86 in New York City. Veterans of the Intrepid, who served
in World War II & Vietnam, lowered the flag in tribute as the carrier passed Ground Zero.

The USS Intrepid served the United States navy for 31 years. The aircraft carrier made military
history as a veteran of World War II and Vietnam, a NASA recovery vessel for the Mercury and Gemini space mssions, and as
a participant in the blockade of Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis. The ship was built at Newport News, VA and was commisioned
on August 16th, 1943. It is classified as an Essex class short-hull Fleet Carrier that is 898 feet long, weighs 42,000 tons
and is equipped with 1,600 hatches and doors and 20,000 miles of electric cable. The Intrepid figured in six major Pacific
theater campaigns including Leyte Gulf, the war's greatest naval battle. It survived five Japanese kamakaze planes and
a torpedo but lost 270 members in combat.
